My dayhome children have been largely interested in pretend play. They are also fond of constructive activities. Their ages and temperaments are open to interaction with their peers.
In order to further support this, I have chosen to make a Pizza Restaurant prop box for them. The following is a list of the items that I have placed in the box:
All six are main ingredients of the pizza. This will help the children develop their fine motor and eye-hand coordination skills. They need to construct their pizza by laying down the materials on a plate:
Crust (felt material)
Tomato sauce (felt material)
Cheese (yarn)
Olives (felt material)
Pepperoni (felt material)
Green bell peppers (felt material)

These are used for order-taking. Children are given opportunities to communicate among themselves. This is one of the roles suggested in the activity.

What children gain from this play
This prop box fosters play among the children. A minimum of two children can join. All six can play simultaneously. These are the following roles that the children can play and switch: customer, waiter (order-taker), chef, busboy, dishwasher, and cashier. These are just recommendations – as startup to the activity and designed not to limit the children’s creativity to go about their play.
As learning is interrelated, children gain a lot from this play.
Cognitive: develop communication skills
Physical: fine-motor, eye-hand coordination, balance, dexterity
Emotional: self-expression, confidence, self-concept, pride
Social: role-playing, taking turns, switching roles
Aside from all these, they definitely had TONS of FUN!
